JOON

Project: JOON Magazine
Role: Writer, Art Director, Copy Editor
Type: Editorial Content
Place: FISK

FISK is a collaborative art and design studio, specializing in graphic design, branding, and illustration. Beyond client work, FISK self-initiates projects to celebrate important cultural climates and acknowledge their global community.

JOON is one of those projects. Envisioned by the studio and brought to life by Brown Printing Inc., JOON captures the essence of the city of Portland, Oregon, detailing its beauty, flaws, and endless creative energy.

In Farsi, “joon” means life and is often used colloquially as a term of endearment. The inaugural issue debuts these themes with features on Dodgr, Maak Lab, Broccoli Magazine, Teruo Kurosaki, Manu Torres, Kee’s #Loaded Kitchen, and other individuals and institutions that make the city great.

Joining a small, dedicated team for this project, I was invited not only to copy edit the entire publication, but exercise my creative writing skills and art direction interests. We hosted two launch parties—one in Tokyo at COMMUNE and the second in Portland at the Art J Foundation.

Landmark of Memory | My written piece tells a story of an architectural wonder that has fascinated me since my move to the PNW: Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial. The eight-story, honeycomb-style mausoleum tells a layered tale of the city, its residents, and the value of making space for everyone.
